Liverpool transfer clause causes Tottenham problem after Michael Edwards masterstroke

Tottenham Hotspur may need to think outside the box if they're serious about signing Bournemouth's Dominic Solanke .

The Cherries are adamant that the 26-year-old forward will only leave the Vitality Stadium this summer if his $83m (£65m/€76m) release clause is met, with only certain clubs able to trigger it.

It's currently thought unlikely that Spurs will break their club-record fee, but if they're keen on securing Solanke, they might consider offering players in a swap deal to get closer to the hefty asking price. Solanke, an England international, netted 19 times in the Premier League last season and has also caught the eye of his former team, Chelsea, according to the Mirror .

Andoni Iraola's side has always anticipated interest in Solanke following his standout season, where he scored 21 goals across all competitions. Furthermore, thanks to a clause included when his sale was put through by Michael Edwards in 2019, Liverpool is due to receive a 20% cut of any profit Bournemouth make from selling Solanke, which could add another layer of complexity to Spurs' pursuit.

Earlier this week, Ange Postecoglou confirmed that Spurs were prioritizing the addition of a new striker. During the club's pre-season tour of South Korea, he stated: "It's still the area of the park we're really probably the thinnest when I talk about squad-wise at the moment, so obviously that's a focus for us. Looking forward to finishing things up in a positive manner and hopefully a good way to finish it off."

Bournemouth owner Bill Foley, speaking in Santa Barbara, also recently expressed his expectation for Solanke to remain with the team for at least another season. The Cherries chief said: "I believe Dom is going to be with us this coming year. He has a release clause, which is very expensive.

"We shouldn't reveal anything about the contract, but that area [reported £65m] sounds roughly correct.

"I guess if someone comes for him, we are going to have to replace him. We have two or three candidates that we have lined up, but I believe Dom will be here next year - and I believe he is going to score 21 or 22 goals."

Ivan Toney has also been linked with Spurs and his Brentford future remains in doubt after entering the final year of his current deal with the Bees.

The England international has yet to return to training following his involvement at Euro 2024 but he could yet move onto pastures new before the transfer window closes.

Liverpool.com says: This is a bit of a win-win situation for Liverpool. If Tottenham decides against signing Solanke, then they won't be as big a threat in the new season. If they do sign him, the Reds get a nice payday.

The only issue comes if Spurs manage to seal players-plus-cash deal. That could appeal to Bournemouth depending on who's offered up, but the Cherries will no doubt want to maximize their return if Solanke is to leave.
