While Australia's Ariarne Titmus lost to Katie Ledecky in the women’s 800-meter freestyle in the 2024 Olympics on Saturday, she's happy with the fight she put up. After all, only a few can say that they were able to give the legendary swimmer a huge challenge.

Ledecky hasn't lost in the said event since making her Olympic debut in 2012. In fact, with this milestone, she became the first woman to win the same Olympic event four times and just the second swimmer to do so after Michael Phelps.

That said, Titmus expressed how proud she is to have given Ledecky quite the challenge. The USA swimmer finished just a second ahead of Titmus, with the former clocking 8:11.04 while the latter recorded 8:12.29.

"To think that eight years later , I challenged her into her fourth consecutive in the 800 is pretty cool," Titmus shared, looking back at her career when she started competing for major championships in 2016, via ESPN.

"So I'm really proud of myself and I feel very honored and privileged to be her rival, and I hope I've made her a better athlete. She has certainly made me become the athlete I am. I felt so privileged to race alongside her."

Ariarne Titmus definitely has every reason to be proud of her performance against Katie Ledecky in these Summer Games. Not only was she able to really give Ledecky a scare in the women’s 800-meter freestyle, but she also beat the 27-year-old American in the 400-meter freestyle.

Titmus and Ledecky both have four medals each in the 2024 Olympics so far, with the Australian having already gotten two gold and two silver medals. Ledecky, meanwhile, has two golds, one silver and one bronze.
