Liverpool transfer target Viktor Gyokeres has sent chief executive Michael Edwards a "come and get me" message following his latest display for Sporting Lisbon.

The Swedish striker has been strongly linked with a move to the Reds this summer following 43 goals and 15 assists in 50 games in all competitions last season, helping his side reach the Portuguese Cup final and lift its first league title in three years.

It's been reported in recent days that Liverpool is now on the hunt for a new striker ahead of the upcoming campaign and Gyokeres is said to be the primary target. Now, following Sporting's season opener against Porto in the Portuguese Super Cup, the 26-year-old has once again shown why he is a wanted man.

Gyokeres was named in the starting line-up for his side's 4-3 defeat on Saturday and managed the full 120 minutes as the tie went to extra-time. However, despite the Leões sacrificing a three-goal lead, the Swede laid on two assists in an electric first half.

The first of those came after just nine minutes of action, with Gyokeres picking up the ball up in his own half and using his pace and power to produce a lung-busting run into the opposition box before squaring for teammate Pedro Goncalves to double Sporting's lead.

Then, just 15 minutes later, clever movement in the final third allowed him to pick the ball up on the edge box, draw his defender in and produce a fine swivel to open up some space before crossing the ball to the back post for Geovany Quenda to volley home for 3-0.

While Gyokeres may not have got on the scoresheet himself, he showed he has more than just goals in his locker when it comes to team contributions, and his impressive forward work was enough reason to suggest he has what it takes to compete in the Premier League .

It would be no surprise if Arne Slot and Edwards had one eye on proceedings at the Estádio Municipal de Aveiro to keep track of Gyokeres' performance. And with Liverpool on the lookout for a new striker, both men will have been happy with what was on show from the Swede.

Premier League rival Arsenal is also said to be keen on signing Gyokeres this summer but the latest noise coming from Anfield is that Liverpool is prepared to outbid the Gunners in order to get its man. According to TeamTalk , Liverpool is not only keen on matching Sporting’s $77million (£60million/€70million) valuation but is ready to surpass Arsenal’s $67m (£52m/€61m) offer.
