Team USA’s Noah Lyles came out on top in a photo finish to win gold in the men’s 100-meter final on Sunday night. He crossed the finish line in 9.79 seconds and was just a hair ahead of Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, who won silver. A video of the race posted to X shows Thompson celebrating what he thought was a win before the scores are revealed and Lyles is announced the winner. Lyles then removes his name tag and raises it to the cheering crowd in celebration. According to Yahoo Sports, Lyles had two main goals for the Paris Games: “Grabbing a world record is one of two things I have left to do, the other being grabbing an Olympic gold,” Lyles said. While he’s one medal closer to his goal, he didn’t quite outperform legendary sprinter Usain Bolt, who set the 100-meter record with a time of 9.58 in 2009. Bolt’s 200-meter record is 19.19 seconds.
