On Saturday , the federal judge in Donald Trump ’s election subversion case struck down the former president’s effort to dismiss the indictment on the argument that Trump was being unfairly prosecuted for political reasons. This is the first notable ruling in the case following the U.S. Supreme Court ’s decision that former presidents have prosecutorial immunity for “official acts,” the Guardian reported. Trump’s defense team argued that, because other election result challengers were not charged criminally, the former president was being mistreated. Judge Tanya Chutkan responded by clarifying that Trump’s charges were for “knowingly making false statements in furtherance of criminal conspiracies and for obstruction of election certification proceedings,” not simply contesting the election results. A hearing to lay out the next steps in the case is scheduled for Aug. 16.
