NBC Commentator Facing Intense Backlash For Huge Error During Noah Lyles' Olympic Win

NBC announcer Leigh Diffey delivered an all-time botched call Sunday on what was supposed to be a triumphant moment for U.S. sprinter Noah Lyles.

Lyles finished first in the men's 100m final to win his first Olympic gold medal by the slimmest of margins at the Stade de France in Paris.

Both Lyles and second-place finisher Kishane Thompson recorded a time of 9.79. But the Jamaican finished a few thousandths of a second behind Lyles.

Given the insanely close finish, there was initially some confusion about which sprinter ultimately came out on top.

But as the Olympic committee at the venue sorted out the final result, Diffey sounded definitive on the NBC broadcast that Thompson had won over Lyles.

"Jamaica's gonna do it!," the announcer said moments before the American was declared the winner.

Fans were completely baffled that the NBC announcer fumbled such a huge moment in one of the Paris Olympics' marquee events.

"oh that's an all-time announcer fumble"

"I cannot recall in a major sporting event for an announcer to blow a call to the magnitude of what just happened on NBC for the mens 100m final."

"Wild that the NBC announcer said live that Thompson won & then went radio silence when the official announcement was made. Super dramatic but also super odd jumping the gun and delay on the correction"

"NBC announcers completed botched the call on the 100m. Amateur hour."

The NBC announcer may have misfired on the mic, but the error took nothing away from Lyles' incredible performance. The U.S. track star became the first American to win Olympic gold in the 100m in 20 years.

Despite finishing second in both his Round 1 and semifinals sprints, the defending world champion posted a personal best sprint of 9.784 in the 100m final. Runner-up Thompson's final time was 9.789, while American Fred Kerley took home bronze with a 9.81 finish.

Once a shot at gold was on the line, Lyles had just enough in the tank to claim Olympic glory.
