Fans In Disbelief Over Slow-Mo Video Of Noah Lyles’ Olympic Finish

On Sunday afternoon, U.S. sprinter Noah Lyles won his first-ever Olympic gold medal after narrowly securing first place in the men's 100m at the 2024 Paris Games.

Lyles (27) barely beat out Jamaican silver medalist Kishane Thompson by less than 0.01 seconds (five-thousandths of a second). In fact, the finish was so close that the official Olympic time for both Lyles and Thompson is the exact same at 9.79 seconds. The top four sprinters all had times within 0.03 seconds of each other.

The end of this race made for a fantastic photo finish, with all eight participants in the frame. In the image, you can Lyles leaning his head forward just enough to surpass Thompson and secure victory.

Even in a slow-motion video of Lyles' finish, it's very hard to tell that he won. That's how close the race was. You can also see that Lyles wouldn't have secured any medal had it not been for his last-second effort.

This was just Lyles' second Olympic medal in his career. He won bronze in the 200m race at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Fans couldn't believe how close the race was when the slow-motion video surfaced online. They took to social media to leave their thoughts.

"The fact that Noah Lyles won this race is insane.. five one thousandths of a second!!!"

"Probably one of the craziest finishes I ever seen"

    "What a finish"

"This has to be one of the best final 10 meters ever ran in the Olympics, my lord"

    "Crazy"

In the 100m semifinal, Lyles came in second place, right behind Jamaica runner Oblique Seville. He went viral for taunting Seville at the finish line but ultimately lost that race. In the end, it didn't matter because Lyles got the last laugh in the final.

Lyles grew up in Gainesville, Florida. He initially committed to compete for the Florida Gators but instead decided to go pro along with his brother Josephus Lyles.

Lyles will also compete in the men's 200m race. Round one will begin on Monday, August 5, at 2:30 p.m. ET.
