U.S. Olympic Legend Michael Johnson's Live Reaction To Noah Lyles' Win

Team USA sprinter Noah Lyles picked up his first Olympic gold medal of his career at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and he did it in dramatic fashion. In the men's 100m race on Sunday, Lyles just barely came out on top, defeating Jamaica runner Kishane Thompson by just five-thousandths of a second.

Lyles pulled off this win despite being in last place nearly halfway through the race. But he closed in on his opponents towards the end and on a last-second lean, he just passed the finish line in first.

BBC commentator and USA Olympic legend Michael Johnson was calling the race. At first glance, many thought Thompson finished first, but Johnson knew it was Lyles all along.

"It was Noah. It's Noah," Johnson kept repeating.

In the 100m semifinal, Lyles went viral for his taunt of Oblique Seville as he crossed the finish line. Seville beat Lyles by 0.02 seconds, but both qualified for the final. In the final, Lyles won gold, while Seville came in last place.

Lyles now has a total of two Olympic medals in his career. His first came in the 200m race in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he won bronze. Lyles will get another chance at a medal on Monday, August 5, in the Paris Games' 200m race.

Johnson won four gold medals back in the 1990s. The sprinting legend won the 4x400m relay in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the 200m and 400m races in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 400m race in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Johnson would have had a fifth gold medal in the 2000 4x400m race had his teammates not tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
