**Spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 8 “The Queen Who Never Was,” now streaming on Max**

House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 8 “The Queen Who Never Was” on HBO opens far, far away from Dragonstone, on a tropical island held by the Triarchy. There, Team Green’s Master of Ships, Tyland Lannister ( Jefferson Hall ), is trying to win the Triarchy’s massive fleet of warships to their cause. After agreeing to a steep price — ownership of the Stepstones — Tyland is told he must also impress their fleet’s admiral, Sharako Lohar ( Abigail Thorn ).

In the books, Sharako Lohar is a man, but the swashbuckling sailor we meet in House of the Dragon is a woman. That’s the only change to the character, however. She’s as tough, aggressive, proud, and lusty as Lohar is in the books. Tyland first has to mud wrestle her to prove his worth. Later, Lohar tells the Lannister that she would like to have children by him. He takes this to mean that they will have sex before she clarifies. She wants him to sleep with her many wives.

We don’t see how this goes down, but we do know that House of the Dragon Season 2 ends with the Triarchy fleet sailing for the Gullet to challenge their nemesis, Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), for ocean supremacy.

Still, Sharako Lohar is a fascinating character who pops off the screen. So what’s her deal? What is the Triarchy? And what role could she play beyond the impending Battle of the Gullet? Here’s everything you need to know about Sharako Lohar on House of the Dragon

Sharako Lohar is the admiral of the Triarchy’s Navy of ninety ships, per the books. As we learn in House of the Dragon , her men are fiercely loyal to her and she won’t sail for Westeros unless Tyland can “best” her. She also has many, many wives.

In the books, Sharako Lohar comes under fire for her actions in the devastating Battle of the Gullet. Tyroshi and Myrish people accuse the Lysene admiral of purposely holding back ships from Lys and sending those from Tyrosh and Myr into the worst fighting to die. This eventually contributes to a fissure between all three cities, ultimately shattering the Triarchy.

After the Battle of the Gullet, she discovers that Triarchy pirates have captured little Viserys Targaryen, Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Daemon’s (Matt Smith) youngest son (who is en route to Pentos on the show). For a time, the boy is in her care before being sold to a Lysene magister.

Sharako Lohar is played by Abigail Thorn, a 31-year-old British transgender actress known for her work producing the YouTube channel Philosophy Tube . You can follow her @theabigailthorn .

What is the Triarchy? House of the Dragon Re-Introduces a Key Season 1 Rival

The Triarchy is, as its name suggest, an alliance of three major cities in Essos. Myr, Lys, and Tyrosh were Valyrian colonies that became “Free Cities” after the Doom. The three cities forged an alliance shortly before the beginning of House of the Dragon and engaged Westeros in a bloody battle for supremacy over the Stepstones. As the name suggests, the Stepstones are a series of rocky outcrops and barren islands forming something of a land bridge between Dorne and Essos.

In House of the Dragon Season 1, the Triarchy used the pirate Craghas Draghar, aka the Crabfeeder, to hold the Stepstones for them. The Crabfeeder delighted in destroying merchant vessels sailing through the Stepstones and feeding victims to literal crabs. Frustrated by the blow to his own fleet, Corlys Velaryon enlisted Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) to help him fight the Crabfeeder.

Westeros currently holds the Stepstones, but the Triarchy haggle for them with Tyland Lannister. You’ll note that one reason why Sharako Lohar is keen to fight for Team Green is so she can inflict vengeance on Corlys and the Velaryon fleet.
