‘Alien Romulus’ Exclusive: Fede Álavrez Reveals The New Cocoon Phase Will Explain More About The Xenomorph’s Anatomy

A lien: Romulus is the movie that will revigorate the Alien movie franchise, and fans have to look no further than director Fede Álaverez ( Don’t Breathe / Evil Dead ) for making that happen.

Fede Álvarez has become one of the goto directors for horror films, so it should come as no surprise he was up to the task of working on a movie that features one of Hollywood’s most famous fictional monsters, the Xenomorph.

It’s been 45 years since Ridley Scott first introduced the universe’s most perfect and deadly creature in Alien , which has concentrated blood for acid and ravaged the crew of the Nostromo. Only Ellen Ripley is alive after an intense showdown at the film’s end.

Four films (six if you count the two Alien vs. Predator movies) subsequently followed what many unanimously call the greatest sci-fi/ horror film of all time. James Cameron’s Aliens (1986) is also one of the greatest sci-fi/action films ever.

Many also agree the Alien movie franchise hasn’t been the same since the first two films, but thankfully, Álvarez, an admitted fan of the movies, is fixing that with his film.

Alien: Romulus aims to recapture what made the first film great by focusing on a new crew, this time a bunch of young planet colonizers/ scavengers who want more out of life.

Little do they know things will go incredibly wrong when they visit the derelict Romulus space station, home to a deadly secret that will lead to them fighting for their lives.

Cassius Life’s Bernard “Beanz” Smalls spoke with Álvarez about his highly anticipated film, and he dropped a big bombshell on us.

In the original Alien film, the tiny creature quickly grows into a full-size Xenomorph when we first meet the chestburster after that historic gruesome scene. It quickly takes out all of the crew members of the Nostromo, leaving fans wondering how in the hell the creature reached adult size so fast.

In Alien: Romulus , we finally get to see precisely how that change happens thanks to the cocoon phase that Álaverez introduces into that film, and he revealed that while chestburster is in the cocoon, something happens that explains one of the mysteries of its unique physiology.

“When it comes to adding new things, I wanted to do it in a way that didn’t betray or contradict the other movies,” Álvarez begins.”I could do it in a way that you go like welp, you’re gonna argue that happened that did not happen in the first movie, maybe it did but we missed it. So the cocoon phase made sense to me when something changed shape and grows so fast, so quickly.”

“Actually, I haven’t talked about this to anybody, but when you look at the footage, you will see that the cocoon is actually kind of spreaded into the ship and the tubes and the electricity and a lot of the energy and things are kind of turned into the cocoon. If you look at the wall you don’t know when the ship ends and the cocoon starts. Because I thought, where is the creature taking all its energy and matter to become so [big] quickly?”

He continues, “So it must sucked it from the ship itself, and then he’s born and has all this biomechanical stuff in it, right you know when you look at it, it has some tubes in the side, so I was like, oh it’s like an amalgamation of organic with the ship, and I was excited by, and I thought well let’s go for it and do it and all plus let’s give it this crazy and slightly perverse look that is inspired by [H.R.] Giger’s work.”

One of Hollywood’s biggest mysteries is no more.

Alien: Romulus opens in theaters on August 16. You can purchase tickets here and watch the entire interview for more juicy tidbits.
