Millions were glued to their screens when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down for their engagement chat with the BBC's Mishal Husain. Initially hailed as a triumph, the interview later came under fire from Meghan herself, who branded it an 'orchestrated reality show' in the 2022 Netflix series, Harry and Meghan.

BBC journalist Husain expressed her surprise at the Duchess's remarks in Saga magazine , hinting that Meghan wasn't just a simple victim caught in an elaborate Establishment scheme but rather that the Royal pair had carefully considered their public pronouncements.

Mishal wrote: "When the Duchess of Sussex said that my engagement interview with her and Harry was an 'orchestrated reality show' I didn't know what to make of it," adding that the couple appeared well-prepared for their future roles and the impact marriage would have on Meghan's life.

Following the release of the Netflix documentary , when probed about Meghan's assertions, Mishal wittily echoed the Queen's famous words regarding the duchess's claims of racism within the Royal Family: "Recollections may vary."

It has since emerged that Royal Household staff at the time now think Meghan's 'performance' during the 2017 interview should have been a bigger red flag, reports the Mirror .

One insider revealed to the Daily Mail's Richard Eden: "At the time, there was so much excitement about the engagement that no one really questioned some of Meghan's comments. But, if you watch it again now, some of her responses seem insincere and her body language is telling."

The interview certainly looks different in retrospect. Meghan claimed to Mishal that she had met Harry on a 'blind date', with Harry confirming: 'It was a blind date, for sure." Yet, in their Netflix series, the Duke reveals they connected through a photo-sharing app, stating: "Meghan and I met over Instagram," he said.

Moreover, Meghan informed Mishal that she barely knew anything about Harry when a mutual friend set up their 'blind date'. "Because I'm from the States, you don't grow up with the same understanding of the Royal Family," she mentioned.

KEEP UP TO DATE WITH THE ROYAL FAMILY

"I didn't know much about him and so the only thing that I had asked her when she said she wanted to set us up was - I had one question. I said, 'Well, is he nice? 'However, it was later suggested that Meghan had taken an interest in the Royal Family since childhood. She was pictured posing outside Buckingham Palace as a 15-year-old tourist with her then friend Ninaki Priddy, who went on to say of her marriage to Harry: 'I'm not shocked at all. It's like she has been planning this all her life."

"[Meghan] gets exactly what she wants and Harry has fallen for her play. She was always fascinated by the Royal Family. She wants to be Princess Diana 2.0. She will play her role ably, but my advice to him is to tread cautiously."
