Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville said that Vice President Kamala Harris should meet with former President Donald Trump’s demands and agree to debate him on Fox so that voters can see him turn up wearing an electronic “ankle bracelet” – typically used for low-risk criminals awaiting trial or sentencing.
Trump announced on Saturday that he would not participate in the September 10 ABC News debate he had previously agreed to with President Joe Biden. Instead, Trump and his team suggested the debate was planned without proper consultation with the Biden campaign while proposing an alternative debate to be hosted by Fox News. Harris and her supporters maintain that Trump had already committed to a debate.
Speaking on Sunday to MSNBC host Jen Psaki, former Biden White House press secretary, Carville appeared alongside network contributor and civil rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton on Inside With Jen Psaki.
Psaki reflected that Trump’s shifting about on debate detail was “a little strange” and reminiscent of “when President George H.W. Bush was hesitant to debate Bill Clinton.” She recalled how Clinton supporters would turn up in “chicken suits” to Bush rallies.
Turning to Carville, the host asked how he thought Harris should handle Trump’s demands. Carville replied:
I think that she should say ‘I will debate him on Fox on the night of September 18th‘ because I happen to know he is going to be in Manhattan on the 18th because that’s when they’re going to sentence him. And I am sure the judge will give a delay in the execution of sentencing to allow him to show up at a debate. So, if you want to have the debate, let’s have it on Fox and let’s have it on September 18th when he is in an ankle bracelet.
Psaki replied: “That is quite a visual. I tend to agree that she should just do the fox debate; why not?”
