Over the past week, I've reported on retail layoffs in Florida from retailers like Aldi and Badcock. However, today I am reporting on layoffs that quite different. Social services organization Luthern Services of Florida is laying off around 150 employees due to reported budget cuts.

About Lutheran Services Of Florida: This organization began in 1982. Today, the organization strives to support Florida's underserved communities. The organization has 1200 employees that serve Floridians from all walks of life.

Employees of LSF give it 3 out of 5 stars on Indeed. While some said they were overworked, a few said that they felt their work was a meaningful way to serve the community.

The Layoffs And Budget Cuts: According to a warn letter dated August 1, 2024, the organization is expected to lay off around 150 employees from its Comprehensive Refugee Services department on or around September 30, 2024, due to funding from the Florida’s Department of Children and Families being "significantly reduced" beginning in October of 2024.

Employees do not have bumping rights and are not part of a union. Examples of some of the job titles being affected are refugee case manager, employment specialist, immigration paralegal, CRS specialist, and case aide.

The letter stated that the organization is unable to determine if the uncertain funding from DCF is permanent and therefore it has provided 60 days' notice to affected employees.

The author is not affiliated with Lutheran Services of Florida or Florida’s Department of Children and Families.
