This peculiar transmission type first popped up in 2012 with the introduction of the 991 generation of the Porsche 911. In that instance, Porsche and transmission supplier ZF engineered the manual and PDK to share many of the same components to help fuel economy and make parts more common along the range. Today, only one vehicle still uses a 7-speed manual in the US, and instead of speed and fuel efficiency, it's built for improved off-road prowess.
