British record holder Molly Caudery fails to reach Olympic pole vault final

The Team GB pole vaulter Molly Caudery has crashed out of the Olympics in qualification after failing to clear her opening height of 4.55m.

There will be no British representation in the women’s final after Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist , Holly Bradshaw, also bowed out, failing three times at 4.40m.

Caudery, from Cornwall, won the world indoor title in March and set a new British record, with high hopes for a medal in Paris, as well as setting a world lead in the event in the build-up to the Games.

The 24-year-old, however, will not contest the final after bowing out after three failed attempts at a height 37cm lower than her British record of 4.92m.

She told the BBC: “It’s honestly heartbreaking. Not the experience I was hoping for and I am so sorry for everyone back home. I wish I could have done better, but I am going to try learn from this and I will take everything I can from it.

“I felt great, the best shape of my life. I didn’t feel too nervous I love a big crowd. I don’t know why, but it wasn’t my day.”

There was further disappointment for Great Britain in the field events with both men’s discus throwers failing to qualify for the final. Lawrence Okoye and Nicholas Percy finished 11th and 12th in their respective qualifying groups.

Meanwhile, British sprinter Zharnel Hughes has withdrawn from Monday night’s Olympic 200m heats due to a hamstring issue.

Hughes, the world 100m bronze medallist, came up short of reaching a second straight Olympic final at that distance on Sunday night after clocking 10.01 to finish 14th of the semi-finalists.

He skipped the European and British championships after sustaining a hamstring injury, but was given a discretionary place and before these Games said he was feeling fit ahead of Paris.

A British Athletics statement said: “Zharnel Hughes has withdrawn from the 200m heats tonight due to a hamstring tightness which requires monitoring for the next 48 hours. No decision has been taken as yet in relation to his relay involvement.”
