Miami Dolphins sign wide receiver who brandished Tua Tagovailoa as 'soft' in now-deleted tweet

Veteran NFL wide receiver Willie Snead sent out a tweet earlier this year naming Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as 'soft' ... before signing for the team and becoming his newest teammate.

An 11-year journeyman in the NFL, Snead has played for six previous teams before joining the Dolphins, playing alongside some of the NFL's best quarterbacks including Drew Brees, Lamar Jackson, Cam Newton, and more recently, Brock Purdy . But Snead did not appear to have much respect for Tagovailoa earlier this year, after sending a brutal tweet aimed at him - one he admits he now regrets.

In January after witnessing the Dolphins lose in the playoffs against the Kansas City Chiefs , Snead tweeted: "The Dolphins will be good when Tua stop acting soft AF."

And after becoming a Dolphin last week, Snead had to quickly clear the air with the team and his new quarterback in Tagovailoa , before speaking on the tweet.

He told reporters: "To be honest, I was watching the game... I'm a fan of the game. And I was rooting for the Dolphins that game. I wanted the Dolphins to get past the Chiefs. I was emotional about it and I tweeted something I probably shouldn't have and I regret it today. But me and Tua talked last night, worked on a handshake. We put that behind us. We kind of talked about it and we're moving on from it."

The Dolphins had the number one ranked offense by most metrics in the 2023 season, with Tagovailoa having his best season yet as a pro after winning a national championship with Alabama.

Since entering the NFL, Tagovailoa has impressed but has been severely criticized for his style of play - specifically when being asked to work through his progressions and pushing the ball down the field in close games. That playoff game that saw Snead fire off the tweet was one in which the quarterback had struggled in, before Patrick Mahomes led the team to a comfortable victory to advance, while Tagovailoa made several mistakes in the game.

But after his career-best year in 2023, the Dolphins rewarded Tagovailoa with a monster contract this summer , with the Hawaiian signing a four-year extension for $212.4 million - with an average of $53.1 million - making him one of the highest-paid players in NFL history.

Snead will hope to battle for a spot on the Dolphins roster, playing in just five games in the last four years.
