Svetlana Staneva's Olympic aspirations were dashed following a defeat at the hands of Lin Yu-ting, who had previously been disqualified from the 2023 Women's World Boxing Championships for not passing gender eligibility tests . During her loss, Staneva gestured conspicuously with her hand.

The Parisian crowd expressed their disapproval vocally when Staneva gestured towards them and then made an 'X' with her hands, which was widely interpreted as an allusion to her XX chromosomes. Yu-ting, alongside Imane Khelif, who also faced disqualification from the world championships over similar eligibility issues, is poised to clinch a medal at the Olympics, a decision that has stirred controversy.

Post-defeat, Staneva remained silent, but her coach Borislav Georgiev conveyed his views about the inclusion of such athletes in the games. Georgiev said to the BBC, "I am not a medical person so I shouldn't say if Lin should or should not compete," adding, "But when the test shows that he or she has the Y chromosome should could not be here."

IBA president Umar Kremlev has previously stated that the details of the tests undergone by Khelif and Yu-ting are confidential, while acknowledging that these boxers will have a competitive edge over other female athletes. He later revealed that the tests "proved they had XY chromosomes and were thus excluded."

Caitlin Jenner, a former men's gold medallist, has expressed her disapproval of their inclusion. She commented: "This issue has hurt the Olympic Games so much... Everyone's talking about it. Shame on the IOC for not protecting the integrity of women's sports, and shame on the IOC for not protecting the safety of women's sports."
