Olympic swimmer Luana Alonso has been barred from staying at the Olympic Village after being accused of creating an 'inappropriate environment'. The Paraguayan athlete recently finished last in the women's 100m butterfly heat, trailing five seconds behind Helena Rosendahl Bach.

Alonso announced her retirement from swimming shortly after, having gained popularity online . Athletes are typically allowed to stay at the Olympic Village in Paris even after elimination, but a statement confirmed that Alonso has been banned due to her creating an 'inappropriate atmosphere'.

Larissa Schaerer, the head of the COP mission, stated: "Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay. We thank her for proceeding as instructed, as it was of her own free will that she did not spend the night in the Athletes' Village."

Alonso has yet to respond to these allegations. News of the 20-year-old's ban comes shortly after she announced her retirement from swimming on Instagram, where she has 491,000 followers.

She wrote: "It's official now! I'm retiring from swimming, thank you all so much for the support! Sorry Paraguay, I only have to thank you! " Further explaining her decision, she said:

"I am very emotional because it was my last race. I am retiring from swimming. I have been swimming for so long, 18 years, and I have so many feelings. Unfortunately, I made the decision to stop and I am happy that my last race will be at the Olympic Games."

Alonso, who previously competed at the Tokyo Olympics, said she'd made her decision 'a long time ago'. She said: "People. My decision was made a long time ago! It wasn't because of the Games! So nothing, I just have to thank everyone who always supported me."

With Alonso's last race ending with the Paraguayan finishing bottom, she also apologized to people in her home country. "It didn't happen the way I wanted it to," she said while reflecting on her failure to come out on top.

"I sincerely apologize to Paraguay, but I did what I could, despite several things that happened to me before. So, I'm happy also to retire here with a full stadium and finally have the Olympic Games."
