House of the Dragon viewers rage season two finale as Otto Hightower makes surprise return

House of the Dragon aficionados have been left steaming after the second-season finale wrapped up with a suspenseful cliffhanger that has everyone talking.

The HBO epic continued to follow the power surge of Rhaenyra Targaryen, Emma D'Arcy's character, as Alicent Hightower (played by Olivia Cooke) grew increasingly worried about Helaena (Phia Saban) and Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), whose tempers are proving more uncontrollable with each passing moment. The episode presented a number of twists, including the re-emergence of Otto Hightower in a jail cell.

However, fans, who've already endured a two-year hiatus after the first season concluded in 2022 due to the ambitious scale and hefty production costs associated with the show, were frustrated to find this season condensed into just eight episodes and all ending with yet another shocking cliffhanger.

Discontent rippled across social platforms, with one angry viewer venting on X, formerly Twitter, writing: "HOTD season 2 finale was a dud in my eyes. Such a big setup that we will have to wait at least 2 years for." Another disappointed viewer expressed on the same platform: "HOTD Finale was a f------ disappointment. Can't believe waited 2 years for this. S03 better be good!!!" A third chimed in with displeasure, stating: "Just seen the season finally of HOTD and man that s--- sucked just like the last 2 episodes!"

Reddit also became a hotspot for viewer discontent: "You know, this season could use 2 more episodes. Would anyone honestly be opposed? Instead, 2 more years here we come." One more grumbled, "Cliffhangers worked in game of thrones because the seasons weren't 8 episodes and didn't take 2 years in between seasons. What a let down."

While some viewers enjoyed the latest episode on its own merits, they couldn't shake off a sense of disappointment with the season as a whole, leaving them to ponder whether the two-year hiatus was justified. "That was a great episode but an underwhelming season finale," one viewer remarked on social media. And another agreed: "They spent the whole season building up to certain confrontations just to make us wait 2 more years to see them finally play out."

In a stroke of good news for fans, HBO has greenlit a third season of House of the Dragon, ensuring that the suspense surrounding the future of the series won't linger indefinitely. Adding to the excitement, the network has dropped hints about another spin-off set to arrive before the third installment of House of the Dragon.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will bring to life George RR Martin's cherished characters 'Dunk', Ser Duncan the Tall (played by Peter Claffey) and 'Egg', his squire Aegon Targaryen (portrayed by Dexter Sol Ansell). Taking place a hundred years after House of the Dragon and a century before Game of Thrones, the inaugural season will consist of six episodes and is slated for release in 2025.
