In a highly anticipated showdown at the 2024 Olympics, Team USA’s gymnastics stars, Simone Biles and Suni Lee , faced unexpected challenges during the unforgiving balance beam finals.

The pair who have been dominating the Olympic Games, encountered a few hiccups on Monday, August 5, that prevented them from reaching their full potential. Biles, 27, and Lee, 21, approached the balance beam competition with high hopes of adding to their medal counts. Lee was the first of the two to compete in the lineup. As she executed her routine, it was clear she was aiming for precision. However, a slight loss of balance during her choreography led to a split on the beam, resulting in a tumble to the mat. Her final score of 13.100 reflected the difficulties she faced.

Biles, known as the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time), followed Lee in the rotation. Midway through her routine, she struggled to maintain her balance, ultimately stepping off the beam and landing on the mat. The reaction from the audience in the packed Bercy Arena was palpable, with a collective gasp echoing through the venue. Biles also finished with a score of 13.100. The scores ultimately meant Team USA would not make the podium in the balance beam final.

The competition saw Alice D’Amato from Italy take home the gold medal with an impressive score of 14.366. China’s Zhou Yaqin secured the silver with 14.100, while Manila Esposito from Italy earned the bronze.

In the aftermath of their performances, Lee expressed her frustration. She said, “We were both just kind of annoyed just because we know what we’re capable of,” Suni expressed. “We weren’t able to get it done today, but she still has floor and she’s the G.O.A.T., so she’ll be amazing.”

While Lee’s journey in the Olympics has come to an end, Biles is set to compete in the floor exercise final, an event where she has consistently shone. With a track record that includes a gold medal from the Rio de Janeiro Games eight years ago, fans are eager to see what she will bring to the mat in her final event of the competition.

However, the games ends, Team USA has a lot to celebrate about. Not only for Suni Lee make history by becoming the first American woman to earn multiple Olympic medals on the uneven bars, but Biles also made history yet again as she became the oldest female gymnast to win all-around Olympic gold.

As the gymnastics continues to watch the games, all eyes will be on Biles and Team USA to bring home more gold.
