Simone Biles needed just one medal at the 2024 Olympics to become the most decorated female gymnast in the USA's history.

She accomplished that goal when the United States won gold during a dominant performance in the team final.

While that win was historic for Biles and Co., it didn't make her the most decorated gymnast in Olympics history, nor did her wins in the all-around and vault victory or her silver medal on floor.

Here's what to know about Biles' medal count and where it ranks in the pantheon of gymnastics greats.

    Simone Biles Olympics medal count

Biles has won 11 medals over her three Olympic appearances. That includes seven gold medals and two each of silver and bronze.

Biles' first gold medal came in the team competition at the 2016 Olympics where she won four total gold medals. She didn't bring home any gold at the 2021 Olympics as she dealt with a case of the twisties , but she followed that up by taking home three gold medals at the 2024 Olympics.

Most gold medals in Olympic women's gymnastics

Many may believe Biles is the most decorated female gymnast of all time, but she isn't. That honor belongs to Larisa Latynina of the Soviet Union. She won nine gold medals during her career, which spanned three Olympics and saw her repeat as all-around champion in 1956 and 1960.

Biles is tied for second in total gold medals by a female gymnast, as can be seen below:

    Rank Gymnast Country Gold medals
1 Larisa Latynina Soviet Union 9
    2 Vera Caslavska Czechoslovakia 7
    Simone Biles USA 7
    4 Agnes Keleti Hungary 5
    Polina Astakhova Soviet Union 5
    Nadia Comaneci Romania 5
    Nellie Kim Soviet Union 5
8 Ludmilla Tourischeva Soviet Union 4
    Olga Korbut Soviet Union 4
    Ecaterina Szabo Soviet Union 4

That is one of the reasons so many are focused on Biles' status for the 2028 Olympics. If she can return and earn three more gold medals at the 2028 Olympics, she would break the 60-year-old record held by Latynina.

Most medals in Olympic women's gymnastics

Biles may be within striking distance of Latynina in gold medals, but she lags a bit further behind in total medals.

Latynina won a whopping 18 medals during her Olympic career. Biles is in second place with an impressive 11, but it would take her more than one Olympic appearance to match Latynina.

Below is a look at the most decorated gymnasts in Olympic history:

    Rank Gymnast Country Total medals
1 Larisa Latynina Soviet Union 18
    2 Vera Caslavska Czechoslovakia 11
    Simone Biles USA 11
    4 Agnes Keleti Hungary 10
    Polina Astakhova Soviet Union 10
    6 Nadia Comaneci Romania 9
    Ludmilla Tourischeva Soviet Union 9
    8 Margit Korondi Hungary 8
    Sofia Muritova Soviet Union 8
    10 Simona Amanar Romania 7
    Maria Gorokhovskaya Soviet Union 7
    Svetlana Khorkina Russia 7
    Karin Buttner-Janz East Germany 7
    Shannon Miller USA 7
    Aliya Mustafina Russia 7

Biles could break her tie with Caslavska by returning to action in 2028, but she may be content having matched the Czechoslovakian star. That's the only total medals record Biles could take aim at should she decide to appear in the 2028 Olympics.

Will Simone Biles participate in the 2028 Olympics?

Biles hasn't given a definitive answer about her future in gymnastics. She has actively avoided discussing it, encouraging reporters not to ask athletes what's next for them in a post on social media.

"You guys really gotta stop asking athletes what’s next after they win a medal at the Olympics," Biles posted. "Let us soak up the moment we’ve worked our whole lives for."

Biles continued to stay mum about that when asked a similar question by NBC's Zora Stephenson after winning silver in the floor exercises.

"Don't ask that question," Biles said a couple of times, through a smile.

Biles did give some thoughts about her future, however. Namely, she offered that she wasn't yet ready to decide her future.

"Never say never," Biles said . "Next Olympics are at home. So you just never know. I am getting really old."

That said, Brazil's Rebeca Andrade told The Washington Post that Biles had, in a private conversation, "confided that Paris would be her final competition."

"I said, 'No, girl, don’t do this,'" Andrade said, per The Washington Post.

As Biles noted, that notion is subject to change. But given that Biles considered retirement after the 2021 Olympics, she might be willing to hang up her hand grips and move on to the next chapter of her life.

Even so, fans probably won't know her decision until the 2028 Olympic cycle begins in earnest.
