Jennifer Lopez Didn’t Think It Was ‘Natural for Anyone’ to Stay Faithful in a Relationship

Jennifer Lopez said she thought men and women approached fidelity in different ways. She shared her own thoughts on it.

Jennifer Lopez believes fidelity is necessary for a successful relationship. Still, she didn’t think it was easy or natural for people to remain faithful. Lopez, who has dealt with infidelity in at least one of her relationships, spoke about cheating. She believed that women struggle with staying faithful too, but they work harder at it than men do.

Jennifer Lopez didn’t think fidelity was natural in relationships

When Lopez was engaged to Ben Affleck in 2003, rumors flew that he cheated on her. While Lopez said she didn’t believe this happened, she discussed the way men approached fidelity.

“They can be faithful,” she told W Magazine. “They just have to want to.”

She admitted that she found it difficult to stay faithful in relationships. She didn’t think it was natural, but she thought it was necessary.

“I don’t think it’s natural for anyone, honestly,” she said. “But it’s considered more acceptable for men to cheat. It’s like men go, ‘Oh, I can’t be with just one woman…’ But hey, it’s hard for women too, you know? Hel-lo! It’s hard for us too!”

She believed people had to work to stay faithful.

“Which is why I think we give our men such a hard time,” she said. “It’s like, Hey, if I can [be faithful], you can do it too. Trust me.”

Jennifer Lopez said men and women behave differently in relationships

Lopez said that while fidelity was important, she didn’t think it was the only key to success in relationships.

“I think you have to be honest, more than anything,” she said. “Communication, fidelity… it’s all very important, but it depends on what kind of relationship you’re in.”

She believed that problems could arise because men and women approach relationships differently.

“It’s the difference between ‘me’ and ‘we,’” she said. “Men operate from their own universe, and women are focused on family, keeping it together. Because we’re caretakers by nature – we give birth, we have to take care of that baby – and men don’t have that experience. They have to bring home the bacon, that kind of stuff. Those are different sensibilities.”

She discussed the role infidelity played in her relationships

Lopez said she didn’t believe Affleck cheated on her despite the rumors. She did, however, feel confident that her former boyfriend Sean “Diddy” Combs was unfaithful.

”It was the first time I was with someone who wasn’t faithful,” she told Vibe Magazine (per Entertainment Weekly). ”I was in this relationship with Puff where I was totally crying, crazy, and going nuts, it really took my whole life in a tailspin … I never caught him but I just knew. He’d say he was going to a club for a couple of hours and then never come back that night.”

She said that she swallowed her suspicions for a bit, but she reached a point where she no longer could.

“[I put up with it] for a little while, yes, but not in the end,” she said.

They broke up in 2001.
