The GLAAD board of directors have expressed their support for the organization’s CEO and president Sarah Kate Ellis in light of a recent report from the New York Times accusing her of lavish spending .

According to the article, Ellis expensed a $21,743 first-class flight to Cannes Lions and used the nonprofit’s funds to renovate her home office, among other items.

In a statement from the nonprofit’s board of directors, they state that Ellis has been “at the helm” of revenue growth over the past decade, and state that they are proud of the work she has accomplished.

“We are certain that she is the right leader for GLAAD, and she and her team have our support and our profound gratitude for their tireless efforts,” the board wrote in the statement.

As for the LGBTQ organization’s internal policies, the Times reported that employees were recommended to fly economy, use public transportation and “be cost conscious.” But, Ellis allegedly expensed first-class flights, luxury hotels and private car services.

Additionally, Ellis’ renewal contract allegedly also included $20,000 to remodel her home office and $25,000 to rent a summer home in Provincetown, Mass.

The board stated that they “want every dollar that is given to have the biggest impact possible,” noting that the organization’s financial statements are audited annually by an external firm. Additionally, the board said when former CFO Emily Plauche raised concerns around expense management to the board last year, they conducted a “thorough, independent investigation” that ended in August 2023.

“The Board recognized that corrective measures were necessary and took swift and decisive action to make changes, including strengthening GLAAD’s policies, controls and training,” the statement read. “As we did then, this Board will continue to review our protocols and procedures. The Board and GLAAD leadership learned from that experience and today the organization is led with even greater rigor.”

Despite the lavish spending allegations, the board of directors doubled down on backing Ellis.

“Our mission has never been more important, and we will continue to support the tireless work of Sarah Kate Ellis and the GLAAD team to advance it,” the board wrote.
