The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup champions are chasing history in the Olympics. Spain will meet Brazil in the Olympic semifinals on Tuesday, and if they advance, they'll get a chance to compete for the gold medal. No national team has ever won a World Cup and then gone on to win the Olympics in the following tournament. Spain is coming off a wild penalty kick quarterfinal shootout against Colombia after they rallied down 0-2 to advance. Brazil eliminated tournament hosts France in a gutsy 1-0 performance with Brazilian superstar Marta watching in the stands on red card suspension.

It'll be a group-stage rematch for the semifinals. The two teams faced each other on the final matchday of group play and Spain defeated Brazil 2-0 to win the top spot in the bracket.

Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming match:

    Storylines

Spain: The World Champions have faced a variety different game scenarios throughout these Olympics. They've been particularly impressive after conceding, and have shown patience in games, sometimes scoring in late moments or stoppage time. They've faced opposition reserving their best games for the champions, head coach Montse Tome has been efficient with in-game rotations for players, and they look destined to break through to the final against Brazil.

Brazil: The squad put together a spirited performance in the quarterfinal against France. They had to manage without longtime Brazil legend Marta during the knockout rounds to eliminate the tournament hosts 1-0 on Saturday. Marta is currently serving a two-game red card suspension for a boot to the head during the final group match day against Spain. The team will likely keep using that as motivation through the knockouts, but they'll need to convert their chances against a Spain side that is comfortable in long stretches controlling the ball.

    Prediction

A repeat of a group game could meantime extra adjustments for both sides, but form and experience will win be in favor of the Europeans in this one. Pick: Spain 3, Brazil 1
