Though some fans were quite disappointed with the House of the Dragon Season 2 finale, showrunner Ryan Condal explained that they are trying to build anticipation, giving the highly anticipated event of Fire & Blood “the time and the space that it deserved.”

The entirety of House of the Dragon Season 2 builds to a grand and explosive finale. However, when the final episode of Season 2 aired on August 4, it did not conclude with a thrilling battle, disappointing some viewers given the long wait for Season 3.

What did the showrunner say about House of the Dragon Season 2 finale?

“We were trying to give the Gullet, which is arguably the most anticipated — well, I would say maybe the second most anticipated action event of ‘Fire & Blood,’ — trying to give it the time and the space that it deserved,” Condal told TheWrap.

He added, “I know everybody wants this to come out every summer. It’s just that the show is so complex that we’re really making multiple feature films every season. So I apologize for the wait, but I will just say if Rooks Rest and the Red Sowing were good then the team that we have together…we’re gonna pull off a hell of a win The Battle of the Gullet.”

House of the Dragon, a spin-off series of the popular Game of Thrones franchise, is based on portions of George R. R. Martin’s 2018 novel Fire & Blood. Following the rise and fall of the Targaryen family, The series is set nearly 200 years before the events of the original.

The Season 2 cast includes Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Queen Alicent Hightower, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, and Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, among others.

The synopsis for House of the Dragon Season 2 reads: “In King’s Landing, Aegon II rules from the Iron Throne, supported by Alicent and the Green Council, under the protection of the largest dragon in Westeros. From exile on Dragonstone, Queen Rhaenyra, and her Black Council consider their next move. Civil war looms as both sides seek support from the great houses of Westeros, ultimately amassing armies — and dragons.”

Both seasons of House of the Dragon are available to stream on Max.
