The Bachelorette star Jenn Tran fired back at contestant Sam McKinney after he and his family publicly criticized the show for giving him a “bad edit.”

McKinney recently suggested in a social media comment that the show was using “smoke and mirrors” to manipulate fans’ perception of the contestants, a claim his parents vehemently supported in their own since-deleted social media posts. But Tran isn’t buying it.

“Listen, nobody can put words in your mouth,” she said during a recent appearance on the Love to See It podcast . “As much as a TV edit is, no one can give you a villain edit in some way, which is what some people are claiming. You have to own your words because no one is putting words in your mouth.”

She continued, “You are the person that’s saying those things, and so what I will say is that sometimes you’ve just got to take responsibility for the things that are coming out of your mouth.”

Tran’s comments come after the contractor’s family came forward on social media with several complaints about the show, seemingly revealing in the process that McKinney will soon be disqualified from the competition. They also took shots at Tran herself.

“To destroy someone’s character and manipulate the truth through editing is wrong on so many levels,” his mother wrote, according to screenshots shared on Reddit .

In a separate post, his father wrote that McKinney’s been “a complete wreck on how he was portrayed.” He added, “The spoiler [of this season’s winner] was revealed and (in my opinion) the network had to paint Sam as this horrendous guy in order for Jenn not to look like a complete idiot.” He concluded his post with the hashtag #STANDWITHSAMM.

McKinney started out strong on the show by nabbing Tran’s First Impression rose, earning himself a one-on-one date with the 26-year-old bachelorette. But his time on the show took a turn for the worst as the season went on, namely after he got into a dispute with Devin Strader and later made a bad impression on Tran during their date.

The lovebirds hit a snag during their date at the New Zealand Sky Tower when McKinney decided they would both jump despite Tran already expressing that she felt “terrified.”

On the podcast, Tran admitted that it was “tough” to watch her one-on-one date with McKinney.

“That moment is very, very interesting for me to watch back and process and watch back with a lot of other eyes on the situation, and I was definitely annoyed in the moment when he made the decision for both of us to jump,” she said.

She considered it to be a teachable moment.

“I don’t want a partner that’s just going to tell me to do something and not be there for me and not emotionally support me in that way,” she said. “So watching it back was tough because it’s also like, that’s not the message that I want people to be watching, like little girls who look up to me, that’s not what you should be allowing your partner to do.”

The Bachelorette airs Mondays 8/7C on ABC.
