Whoever is doing the booking for NPR’s Tiny Desk concerts deserves a raise…immediately! Just this summer alone, we’ve seen the likes of Nelly Furtado, Sean Paul, Tems, Tierra Whack, Chaka Khan, Flo Milli, SWV, Ryan Leslie and Kehlani, just to name a few. The radio network didn’t stop there though.

Last Friday (August 2nd), viewers were blessed with yet another great performance. This time, it came in the form of legendary Yonkers, New York hip hop group The LOX. After being in the game for 30 years, we got to see Jadakiss, Styles P, and Sheek Louch in a completely differently space that showed why they’re so widely regarded.

Being able to work with a live band is essential for potential performers on the platform. For duos and groups, cohesiveness is also supremely important. The legendary trio seamlessly showed off their unmatched chemistry as they went through a multitude of their hits including “All for the Love,” “Recognize,” “Good Love,” “Good Times,” “By Your Side,” “Kiss Your A** Goodbye” and “Money, Power, Respect.” The LOX ended their nearly 18 minute set with the always motivational “We Gonna Make It.”

Considering that their catalog consists of a myriad of gritty street anthems, fans are used to the group only needing mics and turntables to rock a crowd. This was on full display three years ago when The LOX went head to head with The Diplomats in a Verzuz battle (the CLEAR consensus is that they won). With the help of an orchestra and an amazing vocalist, the performance allowed us to hear the group’s music in a way that we may never have thought possible. For the final song, they upped the ante and brought out a string section, only further elevating the experience. The performance was the definition of sophisticated trap music. Check out the concert and what fans had to say about it below!
