WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) — A recent study done by a group of injury lawyers, Anidjar & Levine, from Florida ranks West Virginia as the 6th most dangerous state for recreational boating.

West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Police Officer Justin Hieronimus says being a safe boater starts before you even enter the water.

He says the easiest way to prepare yourself is by taking a boating safety class online or in person.

Having enough properly fitting life jackets, and making sure your fire extinguisher, kill switch and other equipment are working properly is critical according to Officer Hieronimus.

He says whether you’re an experienced or beginner boater it is important to survey the body of water you are going out on.

”Make sure you know the body of water you’re operating on. There’s maps and guides out there. Get with someone who’s been on the river, the lake before. Take it easy the first time you’re out on that particular body of water. You know, it’s easy to come around a turn and there be a sandbar or something that you’re not expecting.”

He says if you are planning on consuming any alcohol on the boat you need to designate a driver that is legally allowed to operate the boat.

If you were born after January 1, 1986, then you are required to always have a boater education card on board with you.
