Whoever you think your dog is going to be friends with, take that thought and throw it out the window. Whether you're getting a dog for your lonely first dog or bringing home a new puppy hoping to make some friends at the dog park, your dog will find a way to make friends with the most unlikely thing possible.

In the case of the Newfoundland in this video from Tuesday, July 30th, that unlikely friend was a toad he found in his backyard. While some other, less gentle pups would've made a snack out of this little guy, the gentle giant had other plans:

Newfoundlands doing what they do best, befriending anything and everything no matter the size. The gentle giant of the world. šŸø p.s. I know that some toads can be toxic to dogs. We donā€™t have poisonous toads in Ohio, plus, Lou never tries to lick it or pick it up in his mouthšŸ™‚ #newfoundlanddog #newfie #gentlegiant #dogs #dogsoftiktok #petsoftiktok

Lou the Brown Newfie is just about the sweetest boy I've seen in my life. Newfoundlands always make me want Newfoundlands, and then I remember that a big dog would probably wipe the floor with me!

Lou, according to the rest of their TikToks, is the gentlest guy around. While he has his moments, he's usually pretty easygoing, even when it comes to his brothers, Odin and Finn. All three of these pups live in Ohio with their mom, and she posts a lot about grooming them, too - an amazing thing for nosey people like me! I've always marveled at how fluffy pups' humans keep them clean!

On this day, though, Lou decided that he was bored of his brothers. He lives with them, so it's no wonder they're on a break - a break during which he goes out to befriend a toad. Luckily, the toad seems to like him just as much. Don't worry; mom states in the caption that there are no poisonous toads where she lives, and she was right there to supervise. Lou is just fine!

What to Do if Your Dog Touches a Toad

If you grew up anything like me, you loved toads/frogs, and your parents were constantly telling you that they were toxic and would give you warts. Maybe that stopped you, or maybe it didn't - I lived to tell the tale!

There are definitely a lot of poisonous toad species out there, and you should exercise caution when you see a toad nearby. As long as you don't spook it, it'll usually stay put and just wait for you to pass. However, sometimes you don't have time to spot it and lead the dog away before it runs up on it, Don't panic! If your dog stumbles across a toad, you should:

    1. Snap a picture as quickly as you can.
    2. Call your closest emergency vet and tell them what happened, including a description of the toad.
    3. If they believe it was a poisonous toad, they'll have you come in immediately.
      1. If not, they'll likely tell you to flush out their mouth, give them a bath, and monitor them.
    4. If they think it is or could be, they'll go through the steps to remove as much poisoning risk as possible before doing a more thorough exam and likely holding for observation.

Lucky Lou, the toad he befriended wasn't poisonous, and they're best friends. Hopefully, though, they're not sharing kisses!
