COVINGTON COUNTY, Miss. ( WHLT ) – The Covington County School District is ready for a new school year. Students will head back to class on Wednesday, August 7.

The district has hired about 30 new teachers and 20 staff members during the summer months. This will also be Jon Chancelor’s first year as superintendent of the district.

Chancelor said hiring qualified educators was a top priority after listening to parents’ concerns.

“It’s important to be able to be able to provide the services that we’re obligated to provide for the students. And the more that you know, the more of those employees we’re able to bring in and train and be highly qualified for the positions that we’re hiring them for us will be better off for the school district,” said Chancelor.

The district’s goal is to improve their B rating and to make sure students get the help they need to succeed.

“We feel like as a district that it benefits everybody, the community at large for us to be able to make sure that all of our students are successful. We all know that life isn’t always fair. We don’t always have equal, but we can give equity. And that’s our goal, is to make sure that our kids all have equity in the things that they have so they can be successful,” said Rachel Rogers, assistant superintendent of special programs at the Covington County School District.

Students can also look forward to 17 new airconditioned buses.
