Brock Purdy finds way to increase his earnings due to infamously modest 49ers salary

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is navigating the financial landscape of being a late-round draft pick while proving his worth on the field. Despite success last season, Purdy is still on his four-year, $3.7 million deal as the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Due to NFL rules, the 49ers cannot offer him a new deal, so Purdy has turned to brand deals to increase his earnings. Under the league's Collective Bargaining Agreement [CBA] and the NFL Players Association [NFLPA] rules, a rookie contract can only be renegotiated once the player's third regular season is completed.

As Purdy enters his third season, he remains underpaid compared to his on-field contributions. During the 49ers training camp, Purdy acknowledged the financial constraints but emphasized his commitment to football.

“Obviously, I don’t make a whole lot,” Purdy said to reporters. I make a good amount playing football. But just with the lifestyle and the privacy for my wife and me and the things that we’re able to do with my family outside of football, we’ve got to make some kind of money somehow."

Purdy elaborated on his process for selecting endorsement opportunities, focusing on alignment with his values and goals. “So marketing’s a great opportunity for us. A business or an organization will hit up my agent, and he’ll bring it to me and he’ll say, ‘Hey, this aligns with who you are and what you believe or this might not, so we can pass on it.’ So, those are the decisions that go into it,” Purdy continued.

"But like I said, I’m trying to provide for my wife and my family moving forward with our lives because you never know. Tomorrow’s not promised. So, we’ve tried to be smart about it, but there’s been some good opportunities this offseason, and that’s why I’ve been able to do some."

Last season, Purdy ranked first in QBR in the NFL and threw for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns, the third most in the league. He led the 49ers to a 12-5 record and a berth to the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs. Although the 49ers lost the game 25-22 in overtime, Purdy's performance was celebrated. He completed 23 of 38 passes for 225 yards and a touchdown.

As the 49ers prepare for the upcoming season, they face critical decisions regarding Purdy's contract extension and the contracts of left tackle Trent Williams and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk , with both entering the final season of their deals. Aiyuk has publicly expressed his desire for a trade, adding another layer of complexity to the team's salary cap management and roster decisions.

The star WR deemed ongoing negotiations with the organization as "disrespectful," during an appearance on The Pivot podcast, signaling his desire to leave. Purdy will still have an array of offensive weapons in Madden cover star Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle next year.
