Jordan Chiles took home a bronze medal in the Floor final at the 2024 Paris Olympics thanks to a last-second score change that catapulted her into third place.

Chiles was initially awarded a score of 13.666, which held her just off the podium behind Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu at 13.700. But following an inquiry from the U.S. gymnastics coaches, the American's score was bumped to 13.766 — giving her the first individual medal of her Olympic career.

While this score change resulted in jubilation for Chiles, it also resulted in heartbreak for Barbosu. The Romanian gymnast had already started to celebrate her bronze medal, but broke down in tears after the news was announced.

All-time great Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci criticized the judges for this last-second score change. Comaneci, a nine-time Olympic medalist, is famous for recording the first perfect 10 in gymnastics history at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

"I can’t believe we play with athletes mental health and emotions like this… let’s protect them," she wrote on X.

These comments sparked some negative energy being thrown Chiles' way. The 23-year-old gymnast seemingly fired back with a message of her own.

"It’s funny how people can still never be happy for someone…" Chiles wrote.

"At this point, we had nothing to lose, so I was like ‘We’re just going to try,’" Team USA coach Cecile Landi said of the decision to appeal. "I honestly didn’t think it was going to happen, but when I heard her scream, I turned around and was like, ‘What?’"
