Jamie Carragher gives Anthony Gordon transfer verdict and sends Sadio Mane message to Liverpool

Jamie Carragher has given his backing for Liverpool to sign Anthony Gordon this summer , and feels he could fill a void left by Sadio Mane.

Gordon continues to be linked with a move to Anfield with just over three weeks left in the transfer window. The Reds have already attempted to complete his signing this summer, only to be left frustrated by Newcastle.

Talks broke down during a first attempt after the Magpies demanded Jarell Quansah in return. Then, when deals had been agreed for Gordon and Joe Gomez to move in opposite directions, Newcastle pulled out as it found other means to solve its profit and sustainability worries .

Speculation has continued over Gordon’s future though, with some suggestions that a move to Liverpool could still happen before the window closes on August 30. Should it happen, it’s a move that would get Carragher’s approval.

“I think it would be a good signing for Liverpool, I'm a big fan,” the Reds legend told Sport Bible . “I can't believe he didn't get more opportunities for England. He's got blistering pace that leaves defenders for dead and not many players worldwide have that.

“I'm a big fan but I'm sure so many people are at other clubs as well, he's at a top club in Newcastle but there's been a lot of talk about whether he was offered to Liverpool.

“There is a lot of time to get between now and the end of the window, I think a lot of teams will do business towards the end of the window because of the Euros. I do feel Liverpool still haven't replaced the pace they had in the attack when they had Sadio Mane and they need to replace that.”

Although Liverpool remains interested in Gordon , it seems Newcastle will do everything in its power to prevent the former Everton star from moving back to Merseyside. According to The Atheltic , the Magpies want to reward the 23-year-old for the progress he has made, with his current contract set to expire in 2026.

Liverpool.com says: Liverpool has been trying to replicate the magic of that front three of Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah ever since it started breaking up with the former’s departure two years ago. It has come close with Luis Diaz, although the Colombian hasn’t quite shown the same clinical nature that Mane did.

Gordon’s record at Newcastle last season was superb, and hopefully he would be able to improve even further if he made the move to Anfield. It certainly seems like the Reds won’t be dropping their interest in a hurry.
