Kaiju No. 8 was a smash hit when it premiered on Crunchyroll earlier this year, and fans were absolutely delighted when Crunchyroll confirmed a second season of the anime was on the way. Now, we’ve got our first look at the second season, and it looks very full-on.

The teaser trailer for Kaiju No. 8 season 2 was released on Twitter yesterday, and in it we see a lot of high-octane, fast-paced action. The trailer shows a host of kaiju rising to lay waste to Tokyo, followed by various members of the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force springing into action. We don’t get to see much of the Defense Force, and it looks like there might be some new characters in the mix, but it’s hard to say at this stage — the trailer is deliberately blurry and vague.

The trailer ends with a few announcements. The first is that Kaiju No. 8 is coming in 2025, but we knew that already, as Crunchyroll announced as much when it announced the second season. The second is that a “season 1 compilation” is in production, which should be a compilation film that shows off key moments of the first season to help people catch up ahead of a new season. Previous compilation films have been aired in theaters ahead of new seasons, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see the same happen here.

The final announcement was that a new original episode, titled Hoshina’s Day Off, is also in production. Hoshina is a character in the anime, a swordsman who is vice-captain of the Third Division who is immediately suspicious of main character Kafka but nonetheless welcomes him into the Division to keep a close eye on him. He was very much a fan favorite character among manga fans when the series was running, even earning a spinoff run of manga called Kaiju No. 8 B-Side in which he’s the main character, so it’s not surprising to see him getting an original episode all to himself.

No release date has been set for the compilation film or for Hoshina’s Day Off.

We loved the anime series when it aired earlier this year, saying in our Kaiju No. 8 review that the series was “polished to a mirror finish, with almost unmatched presentation, and packed with action, humor, and heart.”

We also had the pleasure of talking to the English cast of Kaiju No. 8 in an interview shortly before the first season ended. The interview saw us chatting with Nazeeh Tarsha, the voice of Kafka, Adam McArthur, the voice of Ichikawa, and Abigail Blythe, the voice of Kikoru, all fan-favorite characters, so it’s well worth a read.
