Liverpool fans think Richard Hughes dropped early transfer hint amid Julio Soler links

Liverpool fans are convinced Reds sporting director Richard Hughes dropped a transfer link into a press conference earlier this summer following reports linking the club with Julio Soler .

The Reds are being linked with Lanus left-back Soler , who has been playing for Argentina at the Olympics in Paris this summer. Reports from Argentine TV station TyC Sports says Lanus are seeking a bid of $15m (£12m/€14m) for Soler, with Liverpool linked with the young defender, though the ECHO has suggested those claims are wide of the mark.

Andy Robertson is still Liverpool's first-choice left-back, but the Scotsman dealt with injuries last term and is set to turn 31 next year. The left-back has two years left on his deal at Anfield , which is set to run out in 2026.

While it has been stressed sources closer to home believe links to Soler are premature, that has not stopped some Liverpool supporters on social media speculating about the defender following comments earlier this summer by Reds sporting director Richard Hughes.

The summer of 2024 has been a difficult one for the Reds on the transfer front, with clubs waiting for their players to return to pre-season following international tournament breaks. Liverpool are one of those clubs who were heavily impacted this summer, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold , Virgil van Dijk and Darwin Nunez amongst others returning late for pre-season duty.

Earlier this summer, Hughes said: "I think naturally when there are major competitions during the summer, a World Cup or a European Championships, or in this case there's a Copa America and an Olympics as well, there's a lot of football being played and naturally the attention is going to be there."

And some fans reckon the line about the Olympics could have been to do with the Reds potential interest in Soler. Taking to social media, one fan wrote: "Never heard of Julio Soler but I thought it was interesting at the time that Richard Hughes highlighted the Olympics as being a potential roadblock for transfers happening in July. Argentina have just been knocked out and now this news breaks."

But other fans remained unconvinced. One replied: "I still don't get what the plan would be if we signed this guy. Sell one of the 2 LBs? I was expecting us to sign a starter tbh." A second added: "Rather have Ait-Nouri tbh." And a third said: "He only mentioned it cause it was going on with the Copa and Euros."

Liverpool.com says : "Transfer plans around Anfield are likely to ramp up in the coming days ahead of the new Premier League season. Arne Slot will finally be able to work with all his players this week following Liverpool's tour to the US and will be able to evaluate who is and who isn't part of his plans. The Reds are reportedly narrowing in on a defensive midfielder from outside of the Premier League and that will likely take priority over someone who could be a third choice left-back."
