One of the greatest sporting events in the world took place the other day, and no, I'm not talking about the Olympics! The World Dog Surfing Championships took place at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica. The dog surfing championship raises money for charities such as the Peninsula Humane Society and SPCA.
The video was shared by the TikTok account for @ Dothebay and people can't get enough of these surfing pups. One person commented, "New life goal: see the world dog surfing competition in person!" Someone else said, "I had to watch this several times. just to take in the beauty of all the glorious surfer pups!"
CBS news reports, "Cacau, a chocolate Labrador from Brazil, took home the " top surf dog " gold medal for herself and her owner, Ivan Moreira, as determined by length of ride, technique, confidence and size or strength of the wave. Although the surf conditions were getting rough as the contest progressed, the pair made swift turns on the water to the amazement of the crowd."
How Do Dogs Learn To Surf Anyway?
If you've ever wondered how dogs learn to surf you probably realize that it helps if they belong to a dog parent who is a surfer and that dog parent takes them to the beach frequently.
It helps if you have a dog that enjoys water. Start by getting the dog comfortable with water. This can be done in a pool, lake, or calm section of the ocean. Encourage play and positive experiences with water. If you take your pup out in the water you should always have them wear a special dog life jacket.
Surfer Today suggests "If you want your hound to become an accomplished surfing dog, you need to train him. Training is the key to success, but make sure it is fun for your best friend.
Dogs learn quickly but don't rush the surf learning process.
Introduce your dog to surfboards on dry land before transitioning to the ocean - food and positive reinforcement can work together to boost your dog's performance."
Once the dog is comfy with the surfboard on dry land, move the board to shallow water. Place the board in shallow, calm water and encourage the dog to get on it. Hold the board steady to help the dog feel secure. Treats come in handy here! Once your dog has mastered this you can try moving them to deep water, always with a life vest on. Never force your dog to do this if they seem scared or apprehensive! Here's a video which shows a typical dog surfing lesson.
Who knows? Maybe one day your own pup will take home the gold medal in the World Dog Surfing Championships!
