A KELLOGG’S plant has announced its impending closure after 82 years of business, leaving over 500 people without jobs.

The Kellogg’s plant in Omaha, Nebraska , which opened in 1942, will close in 2026, per ABC affiliate KETV .

Dan Osborn, the former union president, confirmed the closure on Tuesday, per the outlet.

“People have dedicated their entire lives to working here. People are proud of the name and what they’ve done here. So it’s unfortunate it has to end this way,” Osborn said.

Employees were sent home after they learned the news.

Osborn also said the plant creates 27 products, but it will go down to one in 2025, per the outlet.

The closure is resulting in the loss of 550 jobs between the Omaha plant and another closing plant in Memphis, Tennesee .

Kellogg’s shared that its 2nd quarter net sales fell 3.9% and plans to make some serious changes.

A major shift is the modernization of its supply chain which means shifting production from older plants into different locations.

The closure is anticipated for October 2026 due to an agreement made by the company in 2021 after employees went on strike for 11 weeks, per the outlet.

Following the strike, Kellogg’s made promises to raise pay for union workers and new employees, but they also agreed to not close any plants until October 2026.

    ‘DEVASTATING AND HEARTBREAKING’

Those who enjoy the popular cereal brand were upset about the looming closure.

“This is devastating and heartbreaking!! This is not cool and praying,” one shared on Facebook .

A second wrote, “The breakfast cereal business is dying anyway. I feel so sorry for the employees.”

Another wrote about how their Dad worked at the Omaha plant for 44 years.

“So I grew up a cereal kid, it’s sad to see the plant closing. When I drive by, I can smell the cereal cooking and it takes me back to my childhood.. I’ll miss that,” they lamented.

“This is pretty sad news,” commented a user.

A second person also recalled driving by the plant as a child.

“Enjoyed smelling the Kellogg plant while driving on the interstate, you knew they were making cereal, Kellogg plant will for sure be missed,” they said.

One user acknowledged that breakfast foods have changed drastically over the years.

“Younger people don’t eat cereal like kids in the 50’s-80’s. They eat things like avocado toast,” they expressed.
