American tourists should be warned that there is one thing they tend to do that Irish locals find annoying . Ireland receives a huge amount of American tourists every year.

Americans flock to Ireland in huge numbers to explore the country's unique culture and atmosphere. Popular tourist attractions for these visitors include the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin , the Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare, and the Blarney Stone in Co Cork .

American tourists often praise the time they spent in Ireland and many opt to return for a second time. For some, the trip is extra special as it gives them a chance to explore their ancestry at places like the EPIC Irish Emigration Museum in the country's capital city.

However, there is one habit that Americans have that some Irish people find annoying. Many internet users on sites like Reddit and Quora have spoken out about this habit and it tends to come up time and time again.

"As a rule of thumb around these parts, if you’re from here, you’re Irish," wrote one person on Quora. "If you’re not, you’re not.

"Specifically, if your ancestors 4 generations back were from Ireland and nobody’s been within a thousand miles of the place since, you’re not Irish. Declarations like “I’m Irish”, and “I’m coming home/coming back to Ireland” (when you’ve never lived here) will generally be a source of wry amusement for the locals."

Meanwhile, one Reddit user advised: "Don’t talk too much about Irish ancestry unless asked."

Another said: "Just don’t tell people about their own history and try to avoid saying 'I’m Irish too!'"

A third wrote: "Don't tell everybody you're actually Irish because your great great grandfather's cousin immigrated from Ireland."
