Corey and Topanga are one of TV’s greatest love stories. From their iconic first kiss up against the lockers in season one to their picture-perfect wedding they truly are the epitome of what love looks like. But, if you were to ask actress Danielle Fishel, she might have a different opinion.

The actress best known for her work as Topanga Lawrence — then Matthews — just revealed on her podcast Pod Meet World, which she hosts with Rider Strong and Will Friedle, that she wished the two never got married.

Danielle Fishel: Her thoughts on Boy Meets World

For those unfamiliar with the show Corey Matthews (Ben Savage) and Topanga Lawrence (Fishel) got engaged at the end of season five of Boy Meets World. It happened right after their high school graduation, with Topanga proposing to Corey as a way for her to stay in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for college. The couple then spent their entire freshman year of college — season six of the show — engaged before finally getting married in season seven of the show.

This all came after their multiple season-spanning relationship that began in season one when the characters were in middle school.

Says Fishel: “I think I might have her still do the proposal, and maybe he still says yes, and we go through the whole planning, and then we end up deciding it’s maybe not the right choice for us right now. And we still stay together. We don’t have to be broken up, but maybe we just save the marriage aspect for the end of the show and not spend the last, like, full year of the show married.”

As for why she feels this way, Fishel says, “I know from my just my memories of it, after we were married, feeling like, ‘well, now we’re married’, and they had to come up with new, like, upping the stakes for us, and I remember not loving those stakes.”

The two remained married throughout the show’s seventh and final season. They then had two children named Riley and Auggie, who were the focal points of the 2014 Disney show Girl Meets World.

Apparently, though, Fishel was also very skeptical about that as well, remembering “I asked a few questions. I said, ‘Okay, so she’s going to be a girl and how old is she going to be? What are her focuses like? Is the whole show going to be a love story or is it going to be something different? Is she going to have goals?’ It’s really important to me that if we’re going to do a show like this now, with a female lead, that she’s smart and has interests outside of boys and clothes.”

The actress’ opinion soon changed though. “He [creator Michael Jacobs] was like, ‘Absolutely, she’s going to be very well-rounded – the perfect mix of Cory and Topanga, definitely more like Cory with the neuroses. Then [I was] very excited.”

Girl Meets World ran on Disney Channel for three seasons from 2014 to 2017. It had 72 episodes in total, was nominated for three Emmys and jump-started the career of famous singer Sabrina Carpenter.

What is Danielle Fishel doing now?

Fishel can currently be found co-hosting her podcast Pod Meet World with Rider Strong and Will Friedle.

The actress has been married to Jensen Karp since 2018 and they have two children together named Adler and Keaton. She also currently holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from California State University Fullerton.
