QUITO (Reuters) -Ecuador's foreign ministry on Tuesday reaffirmed its stance to not grant safe passage for former Vice President Jorge Glas to leave the country, following a request from Mexico's government to allow Glas to go to a third country.

Mexico broke relations with Ecuador in April after Ecuadorean authorities forcefully entered Mexico's embassy to arrest Glas, who had been granted asylum by Mexico.

Ecuador's foreign ministry responded to the request by resending a statement it published in April, telling journalists in a Whatsapp message that officials "reiterate" their previous stance.

Glas is currently in jail. In its request on Monday, Mexico also asked Ecuador to free Glas from jail and move him to a "safe place" due to his health.

Glas attempted suicide in April after his arrest, his lawyer said.
