'Scandalous' Gymnastics Final Leads To Boycott By Romanian Prime Minister

The nation of Romania is infuriated with the finale of the women's gymnastics floor final at the Paris Olympics. Following a "scandalous situation" with gymnasts Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu shared his thoughts on the event.

Barbosu finished the women's gymnastics floor final just outside of the podium in fourth place with a 13.700 score. She had an 8.000 execution score and a 5.800 difficulty score.

Maneca-Voinea sat right behind Barbosu as the fifth-ranked finisher, earning a 13.700 score, a 7.900 execution score, and a 5.900 difficulty score.

While Borbosu was originally listed as a medal winner, an appeal from United States gymnast Jordan Chiles' coaches resulted in the American climbing up the rankings and Romania being bumped off the podium.

Chiles earned a score of 13.766, with a 7.866 execution score and a 5.900 difficulty score.

Ciolacu called the judges' act "dishonorable" because he believed the Romanian athletes should have been awarded for their successful routines in the floor final.

He mentioned that he has no intention of attending the closing ceremony, given his frustration on behalf of the nation's athletes.

“I decided not to attend the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics following the scandalous situation in the gymnastics, where our athletes were treated in an absolutely dishonorable manner,” Ciolacu said . “To withdraw a medal earned for honest work on the basis of an appeal ... is totally unacceptable!”

The closing ceremony for the Paris Olympics is scheduled for Aug. 11 at 2 p.m. ET.

Despite their exceptional performances throughout the Olympic Games, Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea will have to wait years until their next opportunity at the highest level of international competition.

Barring qualifications, they'll have a chance to reach the podium in 2028 when the Summer Olympics are hosted in Los Angeles, California.
