San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey to Miss Time Due to Calf Strain

    2024-08-06

Terrible news coming out of the San Francisco 49ers training camp this afternoon, as head coach Kyle Shanahan reveals that veteran All-Pro RB Christian McCaffrey has suffered a calf strain and will be out for the duration of the pre-season. McCaffrey was absent from team drills Tuesday and Sunday due to the injury.

“He did it a couple days ago. It’s all right. He didn’t pull it or anything, but you guys probably won’t see him this preseason.”, coach Shanahan told reporters.

    Going Forward

Calf strains are tricky injuries to deal with, both for players and team medical staff. Team doctors often look for 3 grades of calf strain when a player sustains this injury. The typical recovery time is based on the severity of the strain. This means players could be sidelined anywhere from 1 to 12 weeks. In extremely severe cases, players have been known to remain benched for the entirety of a season.

So what now for Christian McCaffrey? We can only assume, because of coach Shanahan’s comments, that the injury is not nearly severe enough to have McCaffrey out beyond the preseason. After resting for the duration of the preseason, it sounds as if he’ll have more than enough recovery time to be ready to keep his role as starting RB for the San Francisco 49ers’ season opener versus the New York Jets on September 9.

    Depth at Running Back

Teams ideally have depth at positions for moments just like this. But for the 49ers, their depth at running back is dwindling quickly. Even more concerning is the fact that they haven’t entered the preseason yet, and they are already down 2 backs. Along with Christian McCaffrey, 49ers backup RB Elijah Mitchell is also out due to injury, and has missed the last 2 practices. Also injured? You guessed. Another RB, this time in the form of rookie Isaac Guerendo.

With three RBs down, the 49ers turned to the market and signed veteran RB Matt Breida. Luckily, Breida is familiar with San Francisco’s offense, having spent his first three seasons with the team, and should be able to quickly readjust to the team’s culture and play style. The San Francisco 49ers square off against the Tennessee Titans in their preseason opener on Saturday, Aug. 10.
