A cause of death has emerged for former NFL wide receiver and star kick returner Jacoby Jones, it's been claimed.

According to TMZ Sports , Jones died from Hypertensive Cardiovascular Disease on July 14 at the age of 40. A medical examiner listed the former Baltimore Raven's cause of death as "natural" - adding that his heart problems were caused by long-term high blood pressure.

Last month, the NFLPA announced that Jones tragically passed away in his sleep at his home in New Orleans, Louisiana. News of his death sent shockwaves across with the NFL, with many of his former teammates offering touching tributes.

"Jacoby was one of the most fun-loving teammates and people I’ve ever been around. Always dancing and laughing, with a permanent smile on his face. Gone far, far too soon. RIP Jacoby Jones," said retired defensive superstar JJ Watt , who played alongside Jones on the Houston Texans .

"My brother, you will truly be missed. They can’t take the memories and the hard work you put in on and off the football field. You always gave back and always a pillar in the community, a @Ravens for life. Love ya JJ," longtime Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis wrote on X.

Fellow ex-Ravens teammate Torrey Smith added: "My brother! I thank God for the memories and your impact on this world. You were 1 of 1! Your play on the field and jokes will live on forever! We have Momma Jones a Lil Coby’s back for life! This one hurt me man! We are going to miss you! Love you bro!"

After being selected with a third-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft by the Texans, Jones went on to have a decorated nine-year career in the NFL. The New Orleans native eventually joined the Ravens in 2012 following five seasons in Houston, immediately making a major impact during Baltimore's successful Super Bowl run that year.

On January 12, 2013, Jones reeled in the "Mile High Miracle," a 70-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joe Flacco with 41 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter of the AFC Divisional Round game between the Ravens and Denver Broncos. The improbable score helped tie the contest, which Baltimore would eventually win in double overtime, 38-35.

Then in Super Bowl XLVII, Jones recorded two touchdowns in the Ravens' 34-31 win over the San Francisco 49ers - one of which was a 108-yard kickoff return to begin the second half. The other score was a 56-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter of the big game.

During his final season in the NFL, Jones suited up for the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Diego Chargers in 2015. He had a brief playing stint with the Monterrey Steel - a professional indoor football team - in 2017 before hanging up the cleats.

After officially calling it quits on his playing career, Jones returned to Lane College - his alma mater - as a wide receivers coach in 2018 and 2019. He eventually moved on to coach tight ends at Morgan State in 2021, later joining Alabama State as a wide receivers coach in 2022 and 2023.
