The teams are set for the women's soccer gold medal match in the 2024 Paris Olympics . The U.S. women's national team will take on Brazil to decide the winner of this year's tournament in the USWNT's first gold medal game since 2012.
These teams are familiar foes on this stage. The USWNT beat Brazil in the gold medal match of the 2004 Olympic Games (2-1) and 2008 Olympic Games (1-0). Only one active player was a part of those games: Brazilian legend Marta.
The USWNT cruised through group play undefeated and notched the most goals (nine) through the first three games. Trinity Rodman's goal against Japan in the final minute of extra time gave the USWNT a 1-0 win . The squad was scoreless until the closing minutes again against Germany in the semifinals, winning 1-0 thanks to Sophia Smith's goal in the 95th minute.
By contrast, Brazil struggled in group play and was the last-placed team to qualify for the knockout stage after going 1-0-2 in group play. Their goal differential gave them the spot over Australia. Brazil beat host France 1-0 behind Gabi Portilho's goal in the 82nd minute despite missing Marta in the lineup due to a red card. Brazil flipped a switch against Spain in the semifinal, winning 4-2 after losing to the squad 2-0 in group play.
