It was reported by The Athletic earlier this week that Liverpool has identified a number six as a major priority, with a target - playing outside of the Premier League - having been picked out. It remains to be seen who that is but Arne Slot needs an elite option in that area of the field and bringing someone exciting in would be a huge boost on the eve of the new season.
Defensive midfield is not the only department that should be bolstered, though. Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today.
Liverpool still wants to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United and a deal is still possible, even though the agreement reached for him earlier in the summer never ended up going through. Intriguingly, according to i News , the Magpies have identified three players who could replace the England winger in the event that he leaves, which could hint at a softening stance.
West Ham duo Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen are supposedly on their radar. Newcastle also likes the look of Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, who was in the England squad for Euro 2024. Newcastle supposedly still expects Gordon to remain at St James' Park despite the interest from Anfield but this might give Liverpool some hope.
Liverpool.com says: It remains the case that as long as Gordon doesn't sign a new contract at Newcastle, there is a really good chance of him ending up playing for the Reds. That feels like a very realistic outcome.
Giorgi Mamardashvili (Valencia)
Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili was linked with a $33m (£26m/€30m) move to Liverpool yesterday, with Revelo reporting that he would move to Anfield and then be loaned to Bournemouth until Alisson Becker needed replacing. Now, the Spanish outlet COPE has suggested he would be keen on the move.
At 23, Mamardashvili still has the best part of his career ahead of him and is he very highly rated. He impressed a lot at Euro 2024 and looks set to make a move away from the La Liga outfit this summer.
Liverpool.com says: If the Reds believe that Mamardashvili is the next best thing, getting him now might be the best plan. It would be a surprise, though, to see Liverpool move first for a goalkeeper when there are other needs that need sorting out.
