Jordan Chiles’ Bronze Medal Could Be In Jeopardy After Latest Development

A last-minute coaches’ inquiry and scoring change helped U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles win her first individual Olympic medal on Monday at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

But the decision didn’t come without controversy.

Chiles’ memorable moment came at the expense of Romania’s Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively — both just .066 points behind Chiles’ 13.766 score.

As a result, Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee president Mihai Covaliu sent a letter of protest to the International Gymnastics Federation contesting the event’s results.

In his statement, Covaliu disclosed that he wanted a “re-analysis by the decision-making factors” that went into Maneca-Voinea’s score. She was docked 0.100 points for her foot touching out of bounds during her routine, which ultimately would have put her ahead of Chiles’ score and made her the bronze-medal winner.

“The way of assessing the score awarded and the refusal to fully present the reasons/evidence for the rejection of the appeal submitted within the deadline provided by the regulation brings serious damage both to the image of international gymnastics but especially affects the athlete,” Covaliu stated.

The International Gymnastics Federation hasn’t publicly addressed the ROC’s request, but if it’s approved and Maneca-Voinea’s score is changed, Chiles could lose her first bronze medal.
