    4 Florida State (11-2) vs 5 vs 12 winner (5 Notre Dame)

CFN Preview of All 134 Teams

Why this is the preseason College Football Playoff Quarterfinal Allstate Sugar Bowl Projection

    - Here’s the main assumption with our bowl projections. The SEC and Big Ten will take up the top two seeds in some way, and the ACC and Big 12 champions will be the 3 and 4. Notre Dame will beat Florida State in South Bend in one of the biggest games of the year.

That should be enough to put the Irish ahead of the Noles in the final CFP rankings, but since it’s conference champs only in the top four, the ACC champion will get the call. And then …

    - Welcome to Round 2. There won’t be any reseeding in the expanded College Football Playoff - it’s a flaw in the system - so no matter what, the 5 vs 12 winner will play the 4 seed.

We’re projecting that Notre Dame will beat Memphis in South Bend in the first round, and then comes the rematch with the Noles, only it’ll be in New Orleans.

    - Notre Dame wins the first time around, and Florida State gets the one that really matters. It’ll be a second straight close, tough battle with both defenses dominating. On New Year’s Day before the Rose Bowl, this will set a wonderful tone for the rest of the College Football Playoff a week later.
