Chinese Drama A Lonely Hero’s Journey Episode 2 Recap & Spoilers

The wartime Chinese drama A Lonely Hero’s Journey , starring Joseph Zeng , Zhang Songwen , and Chen Duling , released its first set of episodes on August 6, 2024 . The drama tells the story of Gu Yizhong (Joseph Zeng), who becomes the face of protest against Japanese oppression in his hometown, Suzhou. Episode two focuses on him managing to escape from the clutch of the military police.

In this installment, Gu Yizhong, along with his fellow imprisoned party members are put in a line to be shot to death. When Yizhong’s turn comes, all of a sudden the prisoner next in line, manages to grab the police officer’s hand, giving Yizhong a chance to escape. Without thinking much, Yizhong makes a run for it and somehow manages a narrow escape by jumping off of the bridge.

Meanwhile, Yizhong’s father, along with his men, arrive at the spot to rescue him. They thoroughly search among the dead prisoner but can’t find any trace of Yizhong. After asking around, they come to know that he has ran away. Meanwhile, Ruitong runs into Gu Huizhong. They discuss how it is impossible that all their hideouts were ambushed on the same day. The duo come to a mutual conclusion that there is a spy among them.

They both suspect the commander to be the one who leaked the news. Although it is against the rules to exchange information, Ruotong shares that its Eagle who is the one in charge of their operation. Hearing his name, Huizhong becomes restless as her husband has left home to meet up with him.

She wants to immediately inform her husband but she is not well. Ruitong decides to go on her behalf. Upon reaching the cafe, she finds Huizhong’s husband sitting at a table and Lian Jin Hai keeping an eye on him from a nearby table. She quietly asks him to leave with her. Jin Hai and the other agents chase them and try to take them down but the two escape.

How does Joseph Zeng manage to escape?

Zhou Zhifei (Zhang Songwen) is questioned by his superior for talking to Zhiping to let Yizhong go, so he could use him as a scapegoat. He answers that although they managed to destroy some of CPC’S liaison points, he did it to protect his internal cell. He also asks for some time to find the address of the newfound army base that is located in one of the 40 islands of the Taihu Lake.

Huizhong, Zhiping and Ruotong decide to leave for the base to inform about the traitor. They leave the Gu mansion before the agents could get a hold of them and meet up with Shuisheng, a fellow underground liaison.

Meanwhile, Yuzhong comes back to the Gu mansion in the middle of the night. His father puts ointment on his injury and also gives him a gun that he can use for his safety. Yuzhong meets up with Ruotong and gives her the sad news of Junxia being shot down. Together, they decide to meet with Eagle.

What happens in A Lonely Hero’s Journey episode 2’s ending?

They wait at the cafe where Yuzhong was supposed to meet with Eagle but none of them has seen him before. Ruotong’s eyes fall on Duan Wentao, his brother’s former classmate. But before they could approach him, Lian Jin Hai arrives there. They overhear the two talking and Jin Hai accusing Wentao of being a mole of CPC. But Wentao shows no sign of remorse and calls Jin Hai and Zhifei traitors. After that a fight breaks out. Yuzhong tries to save Wentao but Jin Hai shots him to death.

Further into the episode, Yuzhong, Ruotong along with Huizhong and her husband arrive at the secret base. Meanwhile, Zhifei receives a letter for an anonymous sender.
