The Australian Olympic Committee has confirmed that hockey star Tom Craig was arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of attempting to buy cocaine in Paris.

French media reported on Wednesday that the 28-year-old had been taken into custody after allegedly trying to purchase cocaine, having been part of the side beaten in the quarter-finals.

A statement read: "The Australian Olympic Committee has confirmed an Australian hockey team member is in custody after being arrested in Paris on August 6th. No charges have been laid. The AOC is continuing to make enquiries and arrange support for the team member."

Having won 101 caps for the national squad over his decade-long sporting journey, Craig also helped clinch a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games and also bagged gold at the Commonwealth Games back in 2018.

However, Craig and his teammates saw their dreams of adding another medal to their collection dashed as they were knocked out earlier this week by a formidable Dutch side at the ongoing Olympics. The Netherlands sealed a sweet 2-0 victory courtesy of Duco Telgenkamp and Thijs van Dam, avenging their previous loss to the Kookaburras in Tokyo.

Australia was also beaten by the likes of Belgium and India but Hockey Australia's chief executive David Pryles had lauded the team's "incredible culture and values" just hours before Wednesday's events.

He expressed on X: "Incredible group of athletes and staff we have. With the right people, culture and values, you can accomplish great things. There's only upside from here."

As the Games approach their climax, Australia proudly sits in third place on the overall medal leaderboard with an impressive haul of 36 medals, including 14 golds, 10 silvers, and 12 bronzes.
