Glo Hampton Shades Abby Lee Miller In ‘Dance Moms: A New Era’ Premiere: “I Know That I Can Make These Kids Stars — And I Can Do It Without Them Resenting Me In Ten Years”

Dance Moms: A New Era may be serving up a new dance coach, new dancers, and certainly new mama drama , but the legacy of Abby Lee Miller and her eponymous dance company still shine through.

At the start of the Dance Moms reboot’s premiere episode, which hit Hulu on Wednesday, Aug. 7, Studio Bleu dance instructor Gloria “Glo” Hampton sets her intentions for her new elite team and lays out her credentials.

“I’ve trained hundreds of kids who now dance professionally,” Hampton explains in a voiceover. “I’m also a single mom who raised a professional ballerina. But this massive opportunity will be the biggest challenge of my dance career.”

She also recalls that she and Abby Lee Miller “used to be dear friends.”

“But Abby’s mad at me,” she continues. “She’s jealous because I’m the coach of the next big team.”

Overhead, viewers hear Miller’s voice echo her infamous tagline: “Everyone’s replaceable.”

Seemingly in response, Hampton asserts, “My goal is to mold this team into such stunning dancers that no one will be replaceable. I know that I can make these kids stars — and I can do it without them resenting me in ten years.”

Studio Bleu’s owner, Kim, also alludes to the Abby Lee Dance Company when explaining to the dancers that they will be “doing a new dance every week.”

“There’s only one other team that has done this before — until now,” she continues. “You’re literally going to be dancing in front of the entire world.”

Hampton chimes in, “But we have to pick the right team to get there. We have to make some tough decisions, guys.”

That doesn’t mean that her instruction lacks any sort of tough love. Just prior to resurrecting the reality franchise’s pyramid, Hampton tells her newly assembled junior elite team that “this is a big deal.”

“People are going to be coming for us,” she adds. “You need to blow the original ALDC girls out of the water. You’re always going to be compared to that. I’m always going to be compared to that. There’s a lot on the line here.”

Then, just ahead of her dancers taking the stage for the show’s inaugural group routine, Hampton issues a backstage pep talk.

“Listen, you have one shot to do this,” she says. “Blow everyone away and make everyone realize who the next big team is. You understand? Team Bleu. Forget ALDC.”

However, after the group number, “Shattered,” places sixth, Hampton concedes that “maybe Abby was right.”

“Maybe everyone is replaceable,” she adds.

While speaking with DECIDER prior to the show’s premiere, Hampton addressed some of these comments, ultimately praising Miller’s tenure on the flagship reality series.

“ Dance Moms was Abby,” she shared. “This is why the show was wildly successful. But I don’t think it has to be the same. In fact, I don’t think people want to see the same thing. I can’t do the things the same way because I’m not Abby, I’m Glo. I can’t be compared to that, nor do I want to be compared to that, but it’s just a different time.”

She also revealed that Miller “congratulated” her via text in light of the new series.

“I was thrilled because I was like, ‘You know, I can use some guidance here. You did this and you did eight seasons out of this. You were the trailblazer, you are the face of Dance Moms ,'” she elaborated. “And so after that, I did reach out to her to try to get together and she didn’t seem too receptive. So I’m not sure that right now she considers me a dear friend. Maybe we’ll get back to that. I’d like to.”
